On the Role of Playful Games in Stimulating Curiosity towards Cultural Heritage

Serious games have an important role in supporting access to cultural heritage through storytelling and game mechanics. These games, however, are more suitable for learning environments: in order to stimulate people to look for cultural content, other means are necessary. In this talk the role playful games may have in eliciting curiosity will be discussed. Specific gaming mechanics, customised characters building and transmedia worlds, will be discussed relatively to the contribution they may provide to technological systems in stimulating people's curiosity towards cultural heritage. We will also present the benefits of these game mechanics in supporting the creation of artificial intelligence systems for automated narrative adaptation and guided tours.
